What are the must-have items that every stylish woman should have in her closet?
Nina Garica, Fashion editor of Marie Claire and Project Runway judge, has complied her list of 100 items, and has issued it as a book: The One Hundred.
I had fun seeing how many of these I had in my closet, and ear-marked some ones to get.
Here they are:
Nina Garcia's The 100:
- A-line Dress. Definitely essential.
- Animal Print. Yup, but don't use too much. Works well with neutrals or bold color solids.
- Aviators. Obvies.
- Ballet flat. Get several pairs in colors and prints.
- Bangles.
- Belts.
- Bikini.
- Blackberry. This one I don't necessarily agree with.
- Black Opaque Tights. Yes - goes with anything.
- Blazer. Looks even better on women than it does on men imho.
- Boyfriend Cardigan. Long ones are in right now.
- Brooch. Mix several for a Kate Spade/Prada vibe.
- Cable-Knit Sweater.
- Caftan.
- Camel Coat.
- Cape.
- Cashmere Sweater. Yum. One in every color please?
- Charm Bracelet. Will always be in style.
- Clutch. The name says it all.
- Cocktail Ring. Go easy on these - one (or two) is enough!
- Converse. The Ramones knew what they were doing - in oh-so-many ways.
- Cosmetics Bag. Keep it organized!
- Cowboy Boots.
- Cuff. My fave: the bone cuff - reminds me of a Halston dress.
- Denim Jacket. So many ways to wear it - but never with jeans ok?
- Diamond Studs. Obvies #2. If you can't afford diamond, go CZ.
- Driving Shoe. Tod's is the classic.
- Espadrilles. I just got a pair of UGG ones of these - I love them. Remind me of Audrey.
- Evening Gown. You never know when you'll get invited somewhere fabulous. Mine is a floor-length bias-cut periwinkle number with miniature sparkles. I've worn it countless times.
- Exotic Skin Bag. Immediately classic chic. Faux is ok!
- Fishnets. The latest is beige. Go for a tight weave. Like a very intensely-colored blush - less is more with this one. Just a peek at the bottom of pants is better than entire leg under hot pants - get it?
- Frye Harness Boot. Investment.
- Fur. Faux only please! very cool faux styles these days.
- Gentleman's Hat. Fedoras are way boss. Doubt it? see if this doesn't change your mind.
- Gloves.
- Havaianas. I personally love ABC-store classics, like Surfahs, but these are good too.
- Hobo Bag.
- Hoop Earrings. All kines.
- Investment Bag. You can double up #30 with this one.
- iPod. Or basically, let's just say music.
- Jeans. Obvies #3. I definitely do not go for the pre-torn look. it's so obviously fake to me.
- Jewelry Pouches. Keeps your prettys pretty and shiny. No oxygen = no tarnish.
- Khakis. Classic. Remember the GAP ad?
- Knee Boots. Sooo good with skirts.
- Leather Pants. If you dare. Here faux is not ok, so I'm going to say no.
- Lingerie. Wear it under everything and you will feel sexy all day. even under jeans/t-shirt.
- Little Black Dress. If we had to narrow this list down to one thing, this would be it.
- Little White Dress. Kissing cousin of above.
- L.L. Bean Tote. Ok - I am going to say any tote you like that carries your stuff.
- Luggage. Wheels and collapsible handle are needed. Unless you go for vintage.
- Mad Money. For when you come upon the perfect lipstick or one-of-a-kind bracelet.
- Men's White Shirt. Ok - here make sure it is a man's cut. You can tell by the buttons.
- Mary Janes. Any size heel you like (or flat).
- Minnetonka Moccasin. I'm just going to say moccasin.
- Missoni Knit. Will never go out of style.
- Monogrammed Stationery. In a word, classy.
- Motorcycle jacket. James Dean, Brando, need I say more?
- Nail Polish. In every color.
- Old Concert T-Shirt. You have had some fun in your life, haven't you? Doubles as sleepwear.
- One-Piece Swimsuit. Yes. Go black for slimming.
- Pajamas. Or not...
- Peacoat. Forever in style.
- Pearl Necklace. Classic #2.
- Pencil Skirt. Flatters nearly everyone.
- Perfume. What's your scent? Just remember - they're supposed to smell you when you are at speaking distance, not when you walk into the room.
- Plain White Tee. Supposedly #2 for what men find sexiest on women. For #1, see #81 on this list.

- Pucci.
- Pushup Bra.
- Quality Champagne.
- Red Lipstick.
- Robe.

- Slippers.
- Spanx.
- Statement Necklace. Wear with a T-shirt to glam up a casual look.
- Stilettos. see #66.
- Striped Sailor Shirt. Very Jean Seberg in Breathless.
- Suit. Get one really good one - tailored to you.
- Sunhat.
- Trench. Standard for a reason.
- Turquoise and Coral Jewelry. Very luxe without being pretentious.
- Tuxedo Jacket. Even if you wear it once a year.
- Umbrella. go for old-fashioned curved-handle style to be most fashionable.
- Underwear. Make sure you feel fabulous in it.
- Valid Passport. Just in case you and Mr. Wonderful want to jet-set to Bora Bora.
- Vans. Love them! And they're so comfortable! Classic navy is the original cool skate shoe.
- Vintage. Fashionistas all need some of this in their closets.
- Watch. Chunky brushed silver is a good look for women.
- Wayfarers. See #3.
- Wellington Boot.
- Wide-leg Trousers. Tres flattering.
- Wrap Dress. If this list were only 2 items, this would be #2.
- Yoga Gear. In my world doubles as lounge wear and sleepwear. Generally better than sweats.
- Zebra Print. See #2. Use judiciously.
- Zippered Hoodie. Nina gets it!
